What does ammonia have to do with the hydrogen of the future? At Maker Days Eindhoven 2026, the ANDREAH project had the opportunity to explore this question with visitors of all ages, bringing advanced hydrogen research out of the laboratory and into a lively public environment. On 12 and 13 September 2026, ANDREAH participated in Maker Days Eindhoven through the TEENTECH2 programme, coordinated by 1CUBE. Together with four other EU-funded projects — AMBHER, ELEKTRA, APOLO and MemCat — ANDREAH joined the event at the Klokgebouw in Strijp-S, where innovation, creativity and technology attracted more than 10,000 visitors. Through the TEENTECH2 stand organised and coordinated by 1CUBE, visitors could discover the ideas behind European research through simple, interactive activities and conversations. The Hydrogen Quiz, Hydrogen Memory Game, Hydrogen Word Search and colouring activities helped introduce younger visitors to concepts linked to hydrogen and the energy transition. For ANDREAH, this created an opportunity to explain — in a much more accessible way — how ammonia can be used as a hydrogen carrier and how new technologies could help convert it back into hydrogen. Ammonia is increasingly being explored as a way of storing and transporting hydrogen over long distances. ANDREAH is working on technologies that could make the conversion of ammonia back into hydrogen more efficient by combining reaction and separation within an intensified membrane-reactor system. At Maker Days, these concepts became the starting point for conversations with visitors who might never otherwise encounter membrane reactors, catalysts or ammonia cracking. The experience showed how science communication can create a bridge between complex research and everyday curiosity — starting with a simple question and opening the door to a much bigger conversation about Europe’s future energy systems. ANDREAH’s participation was part of TEENTECH2, an outreach programme coordinated by 1CUBE, bringing European research on hydrogen, energy and sustainable technologies closer to younger generations and the wider public. For ANDREAH, Maker Days was another opportunity to communicate why research matters — not only by explaining what is being developed, but also by creating curiosity about how these technologies could contribute to the energy systems of tomorrow.
